The Ethiopian Academy of Sciences (EAS), Ministry of Science and Higher Education (MoSHE) of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Higher Education Strategic Center (HESC), and Higher Education Relevance and Quality Assurance Agency (HERQA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on 21 December 2018.
The purpose of the MOU is to outline how these key stakeholders collaborate and work together to advance science and higher education in Ethiopia.
In accordance with the MoU, the Parties will cooperate and collaborate in promoting science, developing policy, strategy and standards that will enable to ensure quality and relevance in higher education and technical and vocational education and training (TVET) in Ethiopia with a view to cultivating a society that is equipped with the tools to harness the application of science and technology.
The Parties agree to undertake joint activities such as facilitating and creating conducive environment for teaching-learning, research, training and community services by devising standards for institutional capacity building, resource endowment, enabling policy frameworks, and results-based reward system; strengthening, and raising the quality, amount, and scope of basic and applied research in various disciplines of science and nurturing a deep-rooted culture of research and innovation in Ethiopian higher education institutions; and conducting joint conferences, panel discussions, public lectures, symposia, and workshops and technology fair to advance scientific research, and technology development.
The Minister of MoSHE, H.E. Dr. Hirut Woldemariam, on the occasion stated the importance of collaborative work and pooling resources through EAS to tackle the challenges of higher education in Ethiopia.
The EAS President, Professor Tsige Gebre-Mariam, on his part said that the mission of EAS and MoSHE are complimentary and reiterated EAS’s capacity to provide technical advice to the Ministry in strengthening evidence-based policymaking and practice, and to deploy the required expertise for any given task. He emphasized that with such collaborative commitments in place, transforming the sector would be within our reach.
The agreement is signed for five years duration.
